FAQ


1. What is this online service about?

This service is to provide convenience to the public to save time and effort so that an applicant can pre-book a time slot when applying for one of the online services before going to their nearest Driving Licence Testing Centre.

2. Who is this service for?

This service is for any member of the South African public with a valid South African identity document who would like to make a pre-booking for one of the online services.

3. Where can I book?

You can access the service at https://online.natis.gov.za which will have a list of all Gauteng DLTC's only. The RTMC will pilot the solution in Gauteng and further provinces will be commissioned after consultation with the relevant stakeholders. Currently you can book at any of the registered DTLC sites in Gauteng.

4. How many times can I make a pre-booking?

You can only make a pre-booking once for the same licence test. You are not allowed to make the same test application at different testing stations.

5. How do I pay for the pre-booking?

We will be offering online payment in the near future but currently, the system does not allow for online payments therefore; you must pay for your booking at the testing station where the pre-booking was made.

6. How long do I have to pay?

The payment must be made within 3 days from making the pre-booking. This is to prevent the slot from being forfeited and allocated to another applicant as it is only a reservation of your booking until it is paid within the prescribed period to make the booking confirmed. Please note that fees are not displayed on this site as the different sites have fees applicable to their province. Please contact the DLTC to enquire about fees.

7. Who can contact if I have a problem?

A telephone number is available on the website as well as an email address that can be used to report any difficulties or problems experienced.

8. What about the eye test?

You can do the eye test on the day of the payment at the DLTC or go to a recognised eye specialist where a certificate will be issued that will be accepted at the testing station.

9. I selected my preferred testing station but cannot get a booking for my preferred date and time.

If the date and time that you prefer is not available, it could be that it has been already allocated as the system is live or; the testing station is fully booked for the date and time you preferred. You can either wait until booking timeslots become available or try a different testing station.

10. The date and time is not convenient for me at the testing station.

You can either try for a date and time at a different testing station that is more convenient or; select a different date and time as all testing stations have specific days on which they test certain licence categories and it could be that the times are already allocated.

11. When can I apply for a learner's licence?

At the age of 16 years or older, you may obtain a code 1 learner's licence which will allow you to drive only:
  • a motor cycle type vehicle with a maximum engine capacity of 125 cc
  • a moped where pedals are available to assist the engine or motor
If you are the holder of a valid code 1 learner's licence and 18 years old or older, you may drive a motor cycle type vehicle with any engine capacity. At the age of 17 years or older you may obtain a code 2 learners licence which will allow you to drive any motor vehicle excluding
  • motor cycle type vehicles
  • any motor vehicle of which the tare exceeds 3 500 kg
  • a bus or goods vehicle of which the gross vehicle mass exceeds 3 500 kg
  • an articulated motor vehicle of which the gross combination mass exceeds 3 500 kg
At the age of 18 years or older you may apply for a code 3 learners licence which allows the driving of any motor vehicle excluding motor cycle type vehicles. Once you have obtained a learners licence, you may drive the type of vehicle for which the learners licence is valid however, you must be accompanied by a driver licenced for the specific vehicle, except in the case of a motor cycle because a learner driver may not transport another person on a motor cycle.

12. What is the procedure to follow when you are in prison and your driver's licence is to expire?

The National Road Traffic Act 1996 (Act No. 93 of 1996) stated that in the case of any person who was unable to apply for such a driving licence, due to him or her having been admitted to any medical facility or detained in any state institution in terms of an order issued or sentence imposed by a court of law, the date determined in that notice shall upon proof, submitted by any such person of the date of his or her discharge from such facility or, release from such institution, be deemed to be a date six months after the date of such discharge, release or return. The above implies that you will be allowed to renew your driver's licence card upon your release if you can present proof of incarceration and release.

13. What do I do at the DLTC after my online booking for driver's licence?

  • Take your ID document, your existing driving licence card, clear ID photographs (for a temporary licence) and the prescribed fee as per the DLTC.
  • Your fingerprints will be taken electronically. You will be required to undergo an eye test unless you went to a recognised optometrist and received a valid certificate.
  • On the day of the test you will be tested according to the K53 testing standard. You will be tested to ensure that you fully understand the road traffic signs, have a sound knowledge of the rules of the road and the different signals which a driver of a vehicle is required to give when driving on a public road and are generally capable of driving the type of vehicle specified on the application.
  • If you pass the driver's licence test, you will be issued with a temporary driver's licence while your credit-card-format driver's licence is produced. The DLTC will notify you via SMS when your licence is ready for collection.
  • You need to produce your ID document when you collect the licence card. Licences not collected within 120 days are destroyed.

14. Penalties for an expired driver's licence.

Currently, there are no penalties for renewing an expired driver's licence however, you encouraged to renew your licence as soon as it nears its expiry date and get a temporary driver's licence if you require it before you receive your driving licence.

15. Surname change for driving s licence

Please take along your new I.D document as proof of your new surname change. In the event of a surname change for women that recently got married and are still waiting for the updated identity document, the current identification document and the copy of the marriage certificate.

16. What if I don't have an I.D document?

You may use an alternative form of accepted identification like a certified copy of your I.D provided that it is under 3 months old, a valid passport or your current driver's licence.

17. A message is displayed that I have an outstanding enforcement order

Currently, there are no penalties for renewing an expired driver's licence however, you encouraged to renew your licence as soon as it nears its expiry date and get a temporary driver's licence if you require it before you receive your driving licence.

18. I cannot make a combination booking

The application, unfortunately does not allow for combination bookings, and as such for every licence type a separate appointment must be made.

19. I did not receive my confirmation of my appointment

In order to receive the confirmation, it is advised to enter an email address in the required field. For those that do not have an email address it is advised to print the confirmation by clicking on the 'Download Booking Confirmation 'button at the bottom of the screen.
